Green Roofs

Green Roofs have many benefits, but what are they and what are the benefits?

Green roofs are living roofs, that are partially or completely covered in vegetation, over waterproofing membranes, it can also include additional layers such as root barrier, drainage or irrigation. Green Roofs can serve several purposes such as providing heat and sound insulation, absorbing water and creating a habitat for wildlife such as birds, bees and insects. Green Roofs are an excellent water management tool and can double the life expectancy of a roof. The water retention on a Green roof can be 45%-90%. They also help reduce gases, pollutants and dust in the air, therefore being excellent for city environments. Fuller and Thomas Construction Ltd have installed many over the years, and we are very proud to be part of a changing generation helping combat climate change .

Brown Roofs

Brown Roofs have many of the same benefits as green roofs, but what are they and what are the benefits?

Brown Roofs are also living roofs, that are completely covered in substrate or vegetation, typically these are left to self seed via the wind or passing birds, making the brown roof self colonising with native flora. Having pools, logs and cobbles provides habitats for invertebrate such as bettles, bees and earthworms etc thus improving the invertebrate species. They also offer a greater biodiversity of species due to the environment provided. The wet areas are great for mosses and lichens

The roofs still offer excellent sound and heat ,loss reduction properties with a very low maintenance plan needed. After several years a brown roof will naturally go green due to maturity of the plants that have managed to establish themselves.

Brown Roofs lend themselves well to solar panel roofs giving your roof a dual purpose.

Which ever roof you decide on both have excellent environmental benefits and will help reduce pollution, produce oxygen and help our wildlife.
